# MCP servers, from your terminal.

Find MCP servers and add them to Claude Code, Cursor or VS Code without leaving the terminal. Building one? mcp-tc starts the project, checks it the way clients see it and sends it to the directory.

`npx mcp-tc`

Needs Node.js 20 or later. To install it globally: `npm i -g mcp-tc`.

[Read the README](https://github.com/mcptc/mcp-tc#readme) [mcp-tc on npm](https://www.npmjs.com/package/mcp-tc)

Free and open source (MIT). No account, no telemetry.

```console
$ npx mcp-tc search github --limit 3
… servers match "github", featured first. Showing 3.
Real output of mcp-tc 0.1.0, run against mcp.tc on 7 Oct 2026. Counts that change every day and the end of one long link are cut (…). The marked address is DeepWiki’s own URL, the one Cursor connects to.
## What it does
The directory commands use mcp.tc’s public MCP server and APIs.
### Find a server and add it
Search the directory, read a listing and add the server to your client with one command. mcp-tc shows you every change before it makes it, backs up your config first and keeps your API keys on your computer.
- `npx mcp-tc search github` · Servers that match your words, featured first.
- `npx mcp-tc info deepwiki` · What it does, how to connect and its tools.
- `npx mcp-tc add deepwiki --client cursor` · Adds it to Cursor. `--client` also takes `claude-code`, `vscode`, `codex`, `gemini` and more.
### See what’s in your clients
`scan` reads the MCP configs of Claude Code, Claude Desktop, Cursor, VS Code, Devin Desktop, Codex and Gemini CLI and looks each server up on mcp.tc. It sends one address per server, never keys, headers or environment values.
- `npx mcp-tc scan` · Your servers, client by client, and which ones are on mcp.tc.
- `npx mcp-tc scan --offline` · The same list, with nothing sent.
### Build a server that reads well
`create` starts a new server on the MCP TypeScript SDK. `check` reads it the way clients and mcp.tc do and tells you exactly what to fix.
- `npx mcp-tc create my-server` · A new project: Streamable HTTP on Express, Cloudflare Workers or stdio.
- `npx mcp-tc check http://localhost:3000/mcp` · Reads your running server and lists what to fix.
- `npx mcp-tc card` · A server card and a `server.json` for the official MCP Registry.
### Suggest it to mcp.tc
`submit` sends your server to mcp.tc with the same checks and limits as the [Submit](https://mcp.tc/submit) page, then follows the check until it finishes. Once the listing is live, `badge` prints the README badge and the website snippets, and `dns-check` tests your TXT record before you request the [verified checkmark](https://mcp.tc/verify).
- `npx mcp-tc submit https://mcp.example.com/mcp` · Sends the suggestion and waits for the result.
- `npx mcp-tc badge my-server` · The README badge, website card and iframe of your listing.
- `npx mcp-tc dns-check example.com` · Looks for your `mcp-tc-verification=` TXT record.
## Made for scripts and agents
The same commands run in a script, a CI job or an AI agent’s terminal. Add `--json` to any of them and read back one JSON document.
`Shell`:
```
npx mcp-tc search postgres --auth none --json
npx mcp-tc add deepwiki --client cursor --dry-run --json
npx mcp-tc help add --json
```
- **JSON on every command**
  `--json` prints exactly one JSON document on stdout. Progress and warnings go to stderr, without colors. A failure has `"ok": false` and an error with a stable code.
- **Documented exit codes**
  Each outcome has its own exit code: 3 when nothing is found, 4 when mcp.tc keeps asking it to slow down, 6 when `check` finds errors. With no terminal to ask in, a command that needs an answer exits with 2 instead of waiting.
- **No telemetry**
  No analytics, no crash reports and no cookies. Every request names the tool in its User-Agent, and the README lists what each command sends.
- **The server’s own URL**
  `add` writes the vendor’s URL or package into the client config. An mcp.tc link never goes there: if a setup ever held one, `add` would stop before writing or running anything.
## Questions
Every command, option and exit code is in the [README](https://github.com/mcptc/mcp-tc#readme).
### Is it free?
Yes. mcp-tc is open source under the MIT license, and mcp.tc is free to use. There is no account to create.
### Does it send my keys to mcp.tc?
No. A key you type for `add` goes only into your client’s config file or the client’s own command, on your computer. It never reaches mcp.tc, the screen or the `--json` output. `scan` sends one address per server and never keys, headers or environment values; `scan --offline` sends nothing.
### Which clients can mcp-tc add servers to?
Claude Code, Gemini CLI and Codex: it runs the client’s own `mcp add` command after you confirm. Cursor, VS Code, Claude Desktop and Devin Desktop: it merges the entry into the config file after showing you the diff, and backs the file up first. claude.ai and ChatGPT: it prints the steps and the link to the connector form. `--client json` prints the entry for any other client.
### Will my server be listed if it passes check?
No. `check` tells you whether clients and mcp.tc can read your server, and what to fix. It can’t predict the decision: on mcp.tc an AI model checks each suggestion, and a person may review it.
### What do I need to run it?
Node.js 20 or later, on macOS, Linux or Windows. `npx mcp-tc` runs it without installing; `npm i -g mcp-tc` installs it as `mcp-tc`, with the shorter alias `mcptc`. The package has no runtime dependencies.
## Try it in your terminal
No install step: npx downloads mcp-tc and runs it.
