## About

Connects an AI assistant to Azure services through one local server. It covers resources such as Storage, Cosmos DB, Key Vault, Azure Kubernetes Service and Azure Monitor, so you can inspect and manage them in plain language. It can be used alone or alongside the GitHub Copilot for Azure extension in VS Code.

Runs locally and starts with npx -y @azure/mcp@latest server start. It is also published on NuGet (Azure.Mcp) and PyPI (msmcp-azure). It signs in with your existing Azure CLI or Microsoft Entra ID credentials through DefaultAzureCredential, and actions are limited to what your account can access.

## What it can do

- Work with Azure Storage and Cosmos DB resources
- Manage Key Vault resources
- Operate Azure Kubernetes Service (AKS) clusters
- Query Azure Monitor data
- Use your existing Azure CLI or Entra ID sign-in

## Tools (3)

- `microsoft_docs_search`: Search official Microsoft/Azure documentation to find the most relevant and trustworthy content for a user's query. (read-only)
- `microsoft_code_sample_search`: Search for code snippets and examples in official Microsoft Learn documentation. (read-only)
- `microsoft_docs_fetch`: Fetch and convert a Microsoft Learn documentation webpage to markdown format. (read-only)

## Example prompts

- "List the storage accounts in my Azure subscription"
- "Show the Cosmos DB databases in my resource group"
- "Which AKS clusters do I have, and what are their versions?"
- "Query Azure Monitor for recent errors in my app"

## Install

### Claude Code

1. Run this in a terminal, in your project folder:

```bash
claude mcp add --transport stdio azure -- npx -y @azure/mcp@latest server start
```

2. Start Claude Code and type `/mcp`. **azure** should show as connected.

Add `--scope user` to make it available in every project.

### Claude Desktop

1. Open **Settings → Developer → Edit Config**. It opens `claude_desktop_config.json`. Add:

`claude_desktop_config.json`:

```json
{
  "mcpServers": {
    "azure": {
      "command": "npx",
      "args": [
        "-y",
        "@azure/mcp@latest",
        "server",
        "start"
      ]
    }
  }
}
```

2. Save the file and restart Claude Desktop.

Needs Node.js on your computer. The file lives in `~/Library/Application Support/Claude/` on macOS and `%APPDATA%\Claude\` on Windows.

### Cursor

[Add to Cursor](<https://cursor.com/install-mcp?name=azure&config=eyJjb21tYW5kIjoibnB4IiwiYXJncyI6WyIteSIsIkBhenVyZS9tY3BAbGF0ZXN0Iiwic2VydmVyIiwic3RhcnQiXX0%3D>) (opens Cursor)

Or add it by hand to `~/.cursor/mcp.json` (all projects) or `.cursor/mcp.json` (this project):

`mcp.json`:

```json
{
  "mcpServers": {
    "azure": {
      "command": "npx",
      "args": [
        "-y",
        "@azure/mcp@latest",
        "server",
        "start"
      ]
    }
  }
}
```

Needs Node.js on your computer.

### VS Code

[Install in VS Code](<https://vscode.dev/redirect/mcp/install?name=azure&config=%7B%22type%22%3A%22stdio%22%2C%22command%22%3A%22npx%22%2C%22args%22%3A%5B%22-y%22%2C%22%40azure%2Fmcp%40latest%22%2C%22server%22%2C%22start%22%5D%7D>) (opens VS Code)

Or from a terminal:

```bash
code --add-mcp '{"name":"azure","type":"stdio","command":"npx","args":["-y","@azure/mcp@latest","server","start"]}'
```

Or commit it to the repo in `.vscode/mcp.json`:

`.vscode/mcp.json`:

```json
{
  "servers": {
    "azure": {
      "type": "stdio",
      "command": "npx",
      "args": [
        "-y",
        "@azure/mcp@latest",
        "server",
        "start"
      ]
    }
  }
}
```

Needs Node.js on your computer.

### Devin Desktop

1. Add it to `~/.config/devin/mcp_config.json` (macOS and Linux) or `%APPDATA%\devin\mcp_config.json` (Windows):

`mcp_config.json`:

```json
{
  "mcpServers": {
    "azure": {
      "command": "npx",
      "args": [
        "-y",
        "@azure/mcp@latest",
        "server",
        "start"
      ]
    }
  }
}
```

2. Refresh the MCP server list in Cascade.

Devin Desktop is the new name for Windsurf.

### Codex

```bash
codex mcp add azure -- npx -y @azure/mcp@latest server start
```

Or edit `~/.codex/config.toml` directly:

`config.toml`:

```toml
[mcp_servers.azure]
command = "npx"
args = ["-y", "@azure/mcp@latest", "server", "start"]
```

Needs Node.js on your computer.

### Gemini CLI

```bash
gemini mcp add azure npx -- -y @azure/mcp@latest server start
```

This adds it to the current project. Add `-s user` to use it everywhere.

### Any client

Most clients that start local servers accept this shape:

```json
{
  "mcpServers": {
    "azure": {
      "command": "npx",
      "args": [
        "-y",
        "@azure/mcp@latest",
        "server",
        "start"
      ]
    }
  }
}
```

Zed puts servers under `context_servers` in its settings, with the same `command`, `args` and `env` fields.

Needs Node.js on your computer.
