## About

Connects an AI assistant to Blender through a socket server that runs inside a Blender addon. You can create, modify and delete objects, apply materials and colors, inspect the current scene, and run Python code in Blender. It can also fetch assets from Poly Haven, Sketchfab and Poly Pizza, and generate models with Hyper3D Rodin and Hunyuan3D.

Runs locally over stdio with uvx mcp-for-blender. It needs Blender 3.0 or newer, Python 3.10 or newer, uv, and the companion Blender addon, which uvx mcp-for-blender install-addon installs. This is a community project, not affiliated with the Blender Foundation. Formerly published as blender-mcp.

## What it can do

- Create, modify and delete 3D objects in Blender
- Apply and modify materials and colors
- Inspect details of the current Blender scene
- Run Python code inside Blender
- Import assets from Poly Haven, Sketchfab and Poly Pizza
- Generate 3D models with Hyper3D Rodin and Hunyuan3D

## Example prompts

- "Create a low-poly desert scene with a few cacti and a setting sun."
- "Describe the objects currently in my Blender scene."
- "Make the selected cube look like brushed metal."
- "Download a wooden table from Poly Haven and place it in the scene."

## Install

### Claude Code

1. Run this in a terminal, in your project folder:

```bash
claude mcp add --transport stdio blender -- uvx mcp-for-blender
```

2. Start Claude Code and type `/mcp`. **blender** should show as connected.

Add `--scope user` to make it available in every project.

### Claude Desktop

1. Open **Settings → Developer → Edit Config**. It opens `claude_desktop_config.json`. Add:

`claude_desktop_config.json`:

```json
{
  "mcpServers": {
    "blender": {
      "command": "uvx",
      "args": [
        "mcp-for-blender"
      ]
    }
  }
}
```

2. Save the file and restart Claude Desktop.

Needs uv (Python) on your computer. The file lives in `~/Library/Application Support/Claude/` on macOS and `%APPDATA%\Claude\` on Windows.

### Cursor

[Add to Cursor](<https://cursor.com/install-mcp?name=blender&config=eyJjb21tYW5kIjoidXZ4IiwiYXJncyI6WyJtY3AtZm9yLWJsZW5kZXIiXX0%3D>) (opens Cursor)

Or add it by hand to `~/.cursor/mcp.json` (all projects) or `.cursor/mcp.json` (this project):

`mcp.json`:

```json
{
  "mcpServers": {
    "blender": {
      "command": "uvx",
      "args": [
        "mcp-for-blender"
      ]
    }
  }
}
```

Needs uv (Python) on your computer.

### VS Code

[Install in VS Code](<https://vscode.dev/redirect/mcp/install?name=blender&config=%7B%22type%22%3A%22stdio%22%2C%22command%22%3A%22uvx%22%2C%22args%22%3A%5B%22mcp-for-blender%22%5D%7D>) (opens VS Code)

Or from a terminal:

```bash
code --add-mcp '{"name":"blender","type":"stdio","command":"uvx","args":["mcp-for-blender"]}'
```

Or commit it to the repo in `.vscode/mcp.json`:

`.vscode/mcp.json`:

```json
{
  "servers": {
    "blender": {
      "type": "stdio",
      "command": "uvx",
      "args": [
        "mcp-for-blender"
      ]
    }
  }
}
```

Needs uv (Python) on your computer.

### Devin Desktop

1. Add it to `~/.config/devin/mcp_config.json` (macOS and Linux) or `%APPDATA%\devin\mcp_config.json` (Windows):

`mcp_config.json`:

```json
{
  "mcpServers": {
    "blender": {
      "command": "uvx",
      "args": [
        "mcp-for-blender"
      ]
    }
  }
}
```

2. Refresh the MCP server list in Cascade.

Devin Desktop is the new name for Windsurf.

### Codex

```bash
codex mcp add blender -- uvx mcp-for-blender
```

Or edit `~/.codex/config.toml` directly:

`config.toml`:

```toml
[mcp_servers.blender]
command = "uvx"
args = ["mcp-for-blender"]
```

Needs uv (Python) on your computer.

### Gemini CLI

```bash
gemini mcp add blender uvx mcp-for-blender
```

This adds it to the current project. Add `-s user` to use it everywhere.

### Any client

Most clients that start local servers accept this shape:

```json
{
  "mcpServers": {
    "blender": {
      "command": "uvx",
      "args": [
        "mcp-for-blender"
      ]
    }
  }
}
```

Zed puts servers under `context_servers` in its settings, with the same `command`, `args` and `env` fields.

Needs uv (Python) on your computer.
