## About

Claude FAF keeps persistent project context in a project.faf file in the .faf format. It detects your stack, scores the project's AI-readiness from 0 to 100%, and writes CLAUDE.md, AGENTS.md, .cursorrules, GEMINI.md and Copilot instructions from that file. It can also store decisions across sessions in a project memory file (.fafm) and recall them later. It runs locally over stdio, started with npx claude-faf-mcp or installed as a Claude Desktop .mcpb bundle. Node 22 or later is required. No API key or sign-in is needed. It uses faf-cli as a bundled dependency, and 14 tools are on by default (30 with FAF\_TOOLS=all).

## What it can do

- Create project.faf with stack detection
- Fill project.faf automatically from repo files
- Score AI-readiness from 0 to 100%
- Sync CLAUDE.md, AGENTS.md, .cursorrules, GEMINI.md and Copilot files
- Write faf's block into Claude Code's MEMORY.md
- Diagnose project.faf and return a trust receipt
- Remember and recall decisions across sessions
- Benchmark AI grounding with and without the .faf

## Tools (14)

- `faf_init`: Create project.faf for a project, with the stack detected by faf-cli.
- `faf_auto`: Fill project.faf from the repo's own files, then write CLAUDE.md.
- `faf_score`: Return the AI-readiness score (0-100%) from faf-cli.
- `faf_go`: Run a guided interview for the project goal and the 6Ws.
- `faf_sync`: Write CLAUDE.md from project.faf, plus AGENTS.md, .cursorrules, GEMINI.md and Copilot files.
- `faf_tri_sync`: Write faf's block into the MEMORY.md that Claude Code loads for the project.
- `faf_setup`: Install the SessionStart hook in project settings, with a preview first.
- `faf_trust`: Validate project.faf and return a trust receipt for its score.
- `faf_doctor`: Diagnose project.faf problems and name the tool that fixes each.
- `faf_context`: Show or set the active project; detail returns the .faf text.
- `faf_bench`: Benchmark AI grounding cold versus with the .faf, with a receipt.
- `faf_etch`: Remember a decision across sessions in the project soul (.fafm).
- `faf_recall`: Recall memories from the project soul, ranked by priority then recency.
- `faf_about`: Explain what the .faf format is.

## Example prompts

- "Set up project context for this codebase"
- "What's my AI-readiness score?"
- "Sync my project.faf to CLAUDE.md and AGENTS.md"
- "Remember that we chose Postgres over MySQL for this project"

## Install

### Claude Code

1. Run this in a terminal, in your project folder:

```bash
claude mcp add --transport stdio claude-faf -- npx -y claude-faf-mcp
```

2. Start Claude Code and type `/mcp`. **claude-faf** should show as connected.

Add `--scope user` to make it available in every project.

### Claude Desktop

1. Open **Settings → Developer → Edit Config**. It opens `claude_desktop_config.json`. Add:

`claude_desktop_config.json`:

```json
{
  "mcpServers": {
    "claude-faf": {
      "command": "npx",
      "args": [
        "-y",
        "claude-faf-mcp"
      ]
    }
  }
}
```

2. Save the file and restart Claude Desktop.

Needs Node.js on your computer. The file lives in `~/Library/Application Support/Claude/` on macOS and `%APPDATA%\Claude\` on Windows.

### Cursor

[Add to Cursor](<https://cursor.com/install-mcp?name=claude-faf&config=eyJjb21tYW5kIjoibnB4IiwiYXJncyI6WyIteSIsImNsYXVkZS1mYWYtbWNwIl19>) (opens Cursor)

Or add it by hand to `~/.cursor/mcp.json` (all projects) or `.cursor/mcp.json` (this project):

`mcp.json`:

```json
{
  "mcpServers": {
    "claude-faf": {
      "command": "npx",
      "args": [
        "-y",
        "claude-faf-mcp"
      ]
    }
  }
}
```

Needs Node.js on your computer.

### VS Code

[Install in VS Code](<https://vscode.dev/redirect/mcp/install?name=claude-faf&config=%7B%22type%22%3A%22stdio%22%2C%22command%22%3A%22npx%22%2C%22args%22%3A%5B%22-y%22%2C%22claude-faf-mcp%22%5D%7D>) (opens VS Code)

Or from a terminal:

```bash
code --add-mcp '{"name":"claude-faf","type":"stdio","command":"npx","args":["-y","claude-faf-mcp"]}'
```

Or commit it to the repo in `.vscode/mcp.json`:

`.vscode/mcp.json`:

```json
{
  "servers": {
    "claude-faf": {
      "type": "stdio",
      "command": "npx",
      "args": [
        "-y",
        "claude-faf-mcp"
      ]
    }
  }
}
```

Needs Node.js on your computer.

### Devin Desktop

1. Add it to `~/.config/devin/mcp_config.json` (macOS and Linux) or `%APPDATA%\devin\mcp_config.json` (Windows):

`mcp_config.json`:

```json
{
  "mcpServers": {
    "claude-faf": {
      "command": "npx",
      "args": [
        "-y",
        "claude-faf-mcp"
      ]
    }
  }
}
```

2. Refresh the MCP server list in Cascade.

Devin Desktop is the new name for Windsurf.

### Codex

```bash
codex mcp add claude-faf -- npx -y claude-faf-mcp
```

Or edit `~/.codex/config.toml` directly:

`config.toml`:

```toml
[mcp_servers.claude-faf]
command = "npx"
args = ["-y", "claude-faf-mcp"]
```

Needs Node.js on your computer.

### Gemini CLI

```bash
gemini mcp add claude-faf npx -- -y claude-faf-mcp
```

This adds it to the current project. Add `-s user` to use it everywhere.

### Any client

Most clients that start local servers accept this shape:

```json
{
  "mcpServers": {
    "claude-faf": {
      "command": "npx",
      "args": [
        "-y",
        "claude-faf-mcp"
      ]
    }
  }
}
```

Zed puts servers under `context_servers` in its settings, with the same `command`, `args` and `env` fields.

Needs Node.js on your computer.
