# DigitalOcean MCP server

> Manage DigitalOcean App Platform, Droplets, databases, Kubernetes and other resources from your AI assistant.

- Listing: https://mcp.tc/i/digitalocean
- Connect: this is a local (stdio) server; install it on your machine (see Install). The listing link is a page, not an MCP endpoint.
- Type: local (stdio)
- Auth: API key
- Category: [Cloud & DevOps](https://mcp.tc/c/cloud-devops)
- Vendor: DigitalOcean
- Verified: yes, mcp.tc checked that this is the official server (https://mcp.tc/verify). It says who runs the server, not that it is safe.

- Repository: <https://github.com/digitalocean-labs/mcp-digitalocean>
- Package: npm `@digitalocean/mcp`

## About

Connects an assistant to the DigitalOcean API so it can manage cloud resources by service. Documented services include App Platform apps and deployments, Droplets, managed databases, Kubernetes clusters and node pools, container registry, and account details such as billing, invoices and SSH keys.

It runs locally with npx @digitalocean/mcp, where the --services flag picks which services to expose, and needs a DigitalOcean personal access token in DIGITALOCEAN\_API\_TOKEN. DigitalOcean also hosts one remote server per service, such as https://apps.mcp.digitalocean.com/mcp, which signs in with OAuth or an API token sent as a bearer header.

## What it can do

- Manage App Platform applications, deployments and configuration
- Create, resize, snapshot and monitor Droplets
- Provision and monitor managed database clusters
- Manage Kubernetes clusters and node pools
- View account, billing, balance, invoices and SSH keys
- Choose which services to expose with the --services flag

## Example prompts

- "List my Droplets and show which ones are powered off"
- "Show the latest deployment status for my App Platform app"
- "Create a snapshot of the Droplet named web-1"
- "List my managed database clusters and their engines"

## Install

### Claude Code

1. Run this in a terminal, in your project folder:

```bash
claude mcp add --transport stdio digitalocean --env "DIGITALOCEAN_API_TOKEN=<YOUR_DIGITALOCEAN_API_TOKEN>" -- npx -y @digitalocean/mcp --services apps,droplets,databases
```

2. Start Claude Code and type `/mcp`. **digitalocean** should show as connected.

Add `--scope user` to make it available in every project. Replace the placeholders with your own values.

### Claude Desktop

1. Open **Settings → Developer → Edit Config**. It opens `claude_desktop_config.json`. Add:

`claude_desktop_config.json`:

```json
{
  "mcpServers": {
    "digitalocean": {
      "command": "npx",
      "args": [
        "-y",
        "@digitalocean/mcp",
        "--services",
        "apps,droplets,databases"
      ],
      "env": {
        "DIGITALOCEAN_API_TOKEN": "<YOUR_DIGITALOCEAN_API_TOKEN>"
      }
    }
  }
}
```

2. Save the file and restart Claude Desktop. Replace the placeholders with your own values.

Needs Node.js on your computer. The file lives in `~/Library/Application Support/Claude/` on macOS and `%APPDATA%\Claude\` on Windows.

### Cursor

[Add to Cursor](<https://cursor.com/install-mcp?name=digitalocean&config=eyJjb21tYW5kIjoibnB4IiwiYXJncyI6WyIteSIsIkBkaWdpdGFsb2NlYW4vbWNwIiwiLS1zZXJ2aWNlcyIsImFwcHMsZHJvcGxldHMsZGF0YWJhc2VzIl0sImVudiI6eyJESUdJVEFMT0NFQU5fQVBJX1RPS0VOIjoiPFlPVVJfRElHSVRBTE9DRUFOX0FQSV9UT0tFTj4ifX0%3D>) (opens Cursor)

Or add it by hand to `~/.cursor/mcp.json` (all projects) or `.cursor/mcp.json` (this project):

`mcp.json`:

```json
{
  "mcpServers": {
    "digitalocean": {
      "command": "npx",
      "args": [
        "-y",
        "@digitalocean/mcp",
        "--services",
        "apps,droplets,databases"
      ],
      "env": {
        "DIGITALOCEAN_API_TOKEN": "<YOUR_DIGITALOCEAN_API_TOKEN>"
      }
    }
  }
}
```

Needs Node.js on your computer. Replace the placeholders with your own values.

### VS Code

Add it to `.vscode/mcp.json`. VS Code asks for the secret the first time and stores it securely:

`.vscode/mcp.json`:

```json
{
  "servers": {
    "digitalocean": {
      "type": "stdio",
      "command": "npx",
      "args": [
        "-y",
        "@digitalocean/mcp",
        "--services",
        "apps,droplets,databases"
      ],
      "env": {
        "DIGITALOCEAN_API_TOKEN": "${input:digitalocean-api-token}"
      }
    }
  },
  "inputs": [
    {
      "type": "promptString",
      "id": "digitalocean-api-token",
      "description": "DIGITALOCEAN_API_TOKEN",
      "password": true
    }
  ]
}
```

Needs Node.js on your computer.

### Devin Desktop

1. Add it to `~/.config/devin/mcp_config.json` (macOS and Linux) or `%APPDATA%\devin\mcp_config.json` (Windows):

`mcp_config.json`:

```json
{
  "mcpServers": {
    "digitalocean": {
      "command": "npx",
      "args": [
        "-y",
        "@digitalocean/mcp",
        "--services",
        "apps,droplets,databases"
      ],
      "env": {
        "DIGITALOCEAN_API_TOKEN": "<YOUR_DIGITALOCEAN_API_TOKEN>"
      }
    }
  }
}
```

2. Refresh the MCP server list in Cascade. Replace the placeholders with your own values.

Devin Desktop is the new name for Windsurf.

### Codex

```bash
codex mcp add digitalocean --env "DIGITALOCEAN_API_TOKEN=<YOUR_DIGITALOCEAN_API_TOKEN>" -- npx -y @digitalocean/mcp --services apps,droplets,databases
```

Or edit `~/.codex/config.toml` directly:

`config.toml`:

```toml
[mcp_servers.digitalocean]
command = "npx"
args = ["-y", "@digitalocean/mcp", "--services", "apps,droplets,databases"]
env = { DIGITALOCEAN_API_TOKEN = "<YOUR_DIGITALOCEAN_API_TOKEN>" }
```

Needs Node.js on your computer. Replace the placeholders with your own values.

### Gemini CLI

```bash
gemini mcp add -e "DIGITALOCEAN_API_TOKEN=<YOUR_DIGITALOCEAN_API_TOKEN>" digitalocean npx -- -y @digitalocean/mcp --services apps,droplets,databases
```

This adds it to the current project. Add `-s user` to use it everywhere.

### Any client

Most clients that start local servers accept this shape:

```json
{
  "mcpServers": {
    "digitalocean": {
      "command": "npx",
      "args": [
        "-y",
        "@digitalocean/mcp",
        "--services",
        "apps,droplets,databases"
      ],
      "env": {
        "DIGITALOCEAN_API_TOKEN": "<YOUR_DIGITALOCEAN_API_TOKEN>"
      }
    }
  }
}
```

Zed puts servers under `context_servers` in its settings, with the same `command`, `args` and `env` fields.

Needs Node.js on your computer. Replace the placeholders with your own values.
