# Fetch MCP server

> Fetch web pages by URL and convert the HTML to markdown, with chunked reading for long pages.

- Listing: https://mcp.tc/i/fetch
- Connect: this is a local (stdio) server; install it on your machine (see Install). The listing link is a page, not an MCP endpoint.
- Type: local (stdio)
- Auth: no API key needed
- Category: [Search & Web Data](https://mcp.tc/c/search-web)
- Vendor: MCP reference servers
- Verified: yes, mcp.tc checked that this is the official server (https://mcp.tc/verify). It says who runs the server, not that it is safe.
- Homepage: <https://github.com/modelcontextprotocol/servers/tree/main/src/fetch>
- Repository: <https://github.com/modelcontextprotocol/servers/tree/main/src/fetch>
- Package: pypi `mcp-server-fetch`

## About

Fetch is a reference MCP server that retrieves a web page from a URL and returns its content as markdown, or as raw content if requested. Responses are truncated, and a start index lets the model read long pages in chunks until it finds what it needs.

It runs locally over stdio, started with uvx, pip or Docker. No API key is needed. By default it obeys robots.txt for model-initiated requests, and it supports custom user agent and proxy arguments. The README warns that it can reach local and internal IP addresses, so use it with care. Installing Node.js is optional and switches to a different HTML simplifier.

## What it can do

- Fetch a URL and extract its contents as markdown
- Return raw page content without conversion
- Read long pages in chunks with a start index
- Limit the number of characters returned
- Respect robots.txt, with an option to ignore it
- Set a custom user agent or proxy

## Example prompts

- "Fetch https://example.com/blog/post and summarize it"
- "Read the docs page at this URL and list the setup steps"
- "Get the raw HTML of https://example.com"
- "Continue reading that page from character 5000"

## Install

### Claude Code

1. Run this in a terminal, in your project folder:

```bash
claude mcp add --transport stdio fetch -- uvx mcp-server-fetch
```

2. Start Claude Code and type `/mcp`. **fetch** should show as connected.

Add `--scope user` to make it available in every project.

### Claude Desktop

1. Open **Settings → Developer → Edit Config**. It opens `claude_desktop_config.json`. Add:

`claude_desktop_config.json`:

```json
{
  "mcpServers": {
    "fetch": {
      "command": "uvx",
      "args": [
        "mcp-server-fetch"
      ]
    }
  }
}
```

2. Save the file and restart Claude Desktop.

Needs uv (Python) on your computer. The file lives in `~/Library/Application Support/Claude/` on macOS and `%APPDATA%\Claude\` on Windows.

### Cursor

[Add to Cursor](<https://cursor.com/install-mcp?name=fetch&config=eyJjb21tYW5kIjoidXZ4IiwiYXJncyI6WyJtY3Atc2VydmVyLWZldGNoIl19>) (opens Cursor)

Or add it by hand to `~/.cursor/mcp.json` (all projects) or `.cursor/mcp.json` (this project):

`mcp.json`:

```json
{
  "mcpServers": {
    "fetch": {
      "command": "uvx",
      "args": [
        "mcp-server-fetch"
      ]
    }
  }
}
```

Needs uv (Python) on your computer.

### VS Code

[Install in VS Code](<https://vscode.dev/redirect/mcp/install?name=fetch&config=%7B%22type%22%3A%22stdio%22%2C%22command%22%3A%22uvx%22%2C%22args%22%3A%5B%22mcp-server-fetch%22%5D%7D>) (opens VS Code)

Or from a terminal:

```bash
code --add-mcp '{"name":"fetch","type":"stdio","command":"uvx","args":["mcp-server-fetch"]}'
```

Or commit it to the repo in `.vscode/mcp.json`:

`.vscode/mcp.json`:

```json
{
  "servers": {
    "fetch": {
      "type": "stdio",
      "command": "uvx",
      "args": [
        "mcp-server-fetch"
      ]
    }
  }
}
```

Needs uv (Python) on your computer.

### Devin Desktop

1. Add it to `~/.config/devin/mcp_config.json` (macOS and Linux) or `%APPDATA%\devin\mcp_config.json` (Windows):

`mcp_config.json`:

```json
{
  "mcpServers": {
    "fetch": {
      "command": "uvx",
      "args": [
        "mcp-server-fetch"
      ]
    }
  }
}
```

2. Refresh the MCP server list in Cascade.

Devin Desktop is the new name for Windsurf.

### Codex

```bash
codex mcp add fetch -- uvx mcp-server-fetch
```

Or edit `~/.codex/config.toml` directly:

`config.toml`:

```toml
[mcp_servers.fetch]
command = "uvx"
args = ["mcp-server-fetch"]
```

Needs uv (Python) on your computer.

### Gemini CLI

```bash
gemini mcp add fetch uvx mcp-server-fetch
```

This adds it to the current project. Add `-s user` to use it everywhere.

### Any client

Most clients that start local servers accept this shape:

```json
{
  "mcpServers": {
    "fetch": {
      "command": "uvx",
      "args": [
        "mcp-server-fetch"
      ]
    }
  }
}
```

Zed puts servers under `context_servers` in its settings, with the same `command`, `args` and `env` fields.

Needs uv (Python) on your computer.
