# fittok MCP server

> Retrieve only the source code relevant to a codebase question, trimmed to a token budget, instead of reading whole files.

- Listing: https://mcp.tc/i/fittok
- Connect: this is a local (stdio) server; install it on your machine (see Install). The listing link is a page, not an MCP endpoint.
- Type: local (stdio)
- Auth: no API key needed
- Category: [Developer Tools](https://mcp.tc/c/developer-tools)
- Vendor: likhithreddy
- Repository: <https://github.com/likhithreddy/fittok>
- Package: pypi `fittok`

## About

fittok parses a repository with tree-sitter into a graph of functions, classes and methods (Python, JS, JSX, TS, TSX, Java, Go, Rust). It ranks nodes against a question using semantic embeddings, BM25, structural matching and PageRank, then returns the actual source of the selected code plus a codebase map.

It runs locally over stdio as a PyPI package, started with uvx fittok (or python -m fittok, or pipx run fittok). No sign-in or API key is needed. Graphs and embeddings are cached under ~/.cache/fittok, and a file watcher updates the graph as files change. The same install also provides a CLI, a Python library and a Claude Code plugin.

## What it can do

- Retrieve relevant code for a question within a token budget
- Parse repos into a function and class graph with tree-sitter
- Rank code by embeddings, BM25 and PageRank
- Return a codebase map with docstrings for follow-up routing
- Update the graph incrementally as files change
- Reset the cached graph with reset\_graph

## Example prompts

- "How does the query execution path work in this codebase?"
- "Find the code that handles user authentication and show it."
- "Trace how a request moves from the UI to the database."
- "Show me the functions related to the sandbox isolation logic."

## Install

### Claude Code

1. Run this in a terminal, in your project folder:

```bash
claude mcp add --transport stdio fittok -- uvx fittok
```

2. Start Claude Code and type `/mcp`. **fittok** should show as connected.

Add `--scope user` to make it available in every project.

### Claude Desktop

1. Open **Settings → Developer → Edit Config**. It opens `claude_desktop_config.json`. Add:

`claude_desktop_config.json`:

```json
{
  "mcpServers": {
    "fittok": {
      "command": "uvx",
      "args": [
        "fittok"
      ]
    }
  }
}
```

2. Save the file and restart Claude Desktop.

Needs uv (Python) on your computer. The file lives in `~/Library/Application Support/Claude/` on macOS and `%APPDATA%\Claude\` on Windows.

### Cursor

[Add to Cursor](<https://cursor.com/install-mcp?name=fittok&config=eyJjb21tYW5kIjoidXZ4IiwiYXJncyI6WyJmaXR0b2siXX0%3D>) (opens Cursor)

Or add it by hand to `~/.cursor/mcp.json` (all projects) or `.cursor/mcp.json` (this project):

`mcp.json`:

```json
{
  "mcpServers": {
    "fittok": {
      "command": "uvx",
      "args": [
        "fittok"
      ]
    }
  }
}
```

Needs uv (Python) on your computer.

### VS Code

[Install in VS Code](<https://vscode.dev/redirect/mcp/install?name=fittok&config=%7B%22type%22%3A%22stdio%22%2C%22command%22%3A%22uvx%22%2C%22args%22%3A%5B%22fittok%22%5D%7D>) (opens VS Code)

Or from a terminal:

```bash
code --add-mcp '{"name":"fittok","type":"stdio","command":"uvx","args":["fittok"]}'
```

Or commit it to the repo in `.vscode/mcp.json`:

`.vscode/mcp.json`:

```json
{
  "servers": {
    "fittok": {
      "type": "stdio",
      "command": "uvx",
      "args": [
        "fittok"
      ]
    }
  }
}
```

Needs uv (Python) on your computer.

### Devin Desktop

1. Add it to `~/.config/devin/mcp_config.json` (macOS and Linux) or `%APPDATA%\devin\mcp_config.json` (Windows):

`mcp_config.json`:

```json
{
  "mcpServers": {
    "fittok": {
      "command": "uvx",
      "args": [
        "fittok"
      ]
    }
  }
}
```

2. Refresh the MCP server list in Cascade.

Devin Desktop is the new name for Windsurf.

### Codex

```bash
codex mcp add fittok -- uvx fittok
```

Or edit `~/.codex/config.toml` directly:

`config.toml`:

```toml
[mcp_servers.fittok]
command = "uvx"
args = ["fittok"]
```

Needs uv (Python) on your computer.

### Gemini CLI

```bash
gemini mcp add fittok uvx fittok
```

This adds it to the current project. Add `-s user` to use it everywhere.

### Any client

Most clients that start local servers accept this shape:

```json
{
  "mcpServers": {
    "fittok": {
      "command": "uvx",
      "args": [
        "fittok"
      ]
    }
  }
}
```

Zed puts servers under `context_servers` in its settings, with the same `command`, `args` and `env` fields.

Needs uv (Python) on your computer.
