# GameDev.net MCP server

> Search and cite GameDev.net forums, tutorials, blogs, ShaderLab shader projects and game-industry news.

- Listing: https://mcp.tc/i/gamedev-net
- Connect: use the server's own URL `https://gamedev.net/mcp/` (no sign-in); clients connect to it directly. The listing link is a page, not an MCP endpoint.
- Type: remote (Streamable HTTP)
- Auth: none
- Category: [Docs & Knowledge](https://mcp.tc/c/docs-knowledge)
- Vendor: GameDev.net

## About

Gives an assistant read-only access to public GameDev.net content: forum threads, tutorials, blogs, projects, portfolios and game-industry news. It can run full-text search, fetch whole threads and articles, list recent or trending items, and browse ShaderLab shader projects with portability reports for three.js, Godot, Unity or WebGL.

Runs as a hosted streamable HTTP endpoint at https://gamedev.net/mcp/. No sign-in or API key is needed. The server asks that answers using its content include a visible link to gamedev.net, and bulk retrieval requires a license (see gamedev.net/licensing).

## What it can do

- Search forums, tutorials, blogs, projects and news in one query
- Read full forum threads including the accepted answer
- Fetch the full text of a tutorial, blog, news or project item
- List recent content and trending game-industry stories
- Read a story timeline with sources for each article
- Search ShaderLab projects by runtime, topic, difficulty and license
- Get shader project passes and a portability report for a target engine

## Tools (10)

- `search_site`: Full-text search across forums, tutorials, blogs, projects, portfolios and news with type filters.
- `get_thread`: Fetch a forum thread with its posts and the accepted answer.
- `get_content`: Fetch the full public text of an item using its content type and id.
- `list_recent`: List the most recent content of a given kind.
- `search_shaders`: Search published ShaderLab projects with runtime, topic, difficulty and license filters.
- `get_shader_project`: Fetch a ShaderLab project as passes, bindings, parameters, annotations and techniques.
- `list_shader_topics`: List the curated ShaderLab topic taxonomy with optional counts and examples.
- `get_shader_portability_report`: Run portability analysis for a project against three.js, Godot, Unity or WebGL.
- `list_trending_content`: List trending game-industry news as story clusters or individual items, optionally by tag.
- `get_story`: Fetch a story cluster with its AI summary, key facts and source timeline.

## Example prompts

- "Search GameDev.net forums for advice on implementing A\* pathfinding on a grid"
- "What game-industry stories are trending on GameDev.net this week?"
- "Find ShaderLab water shaders and check how portable one is to Godot"
- "Show the latest GameDev.net tutorials on procedural level generation"

## Install

### Claude Code

1. Run this in a terminal, in your project folder:

```bash
claude mcp add --transport http gamedev-net https://gamedev.net/mcp/
```

2. Start Claude Code and type `/mcp`. **gamedev-net** should show as connected.

Add `--scope user` to make it available in every project, not just this one.

### Claude Desktop

1. Open **Customize → Connectors**, click **+ Add**, then **Add custom connector**.

2. Name it **GameDev.net** and paste this URL:

```url
https://gamedev.net/mcp/
```

3. Click **Add**. Its tools appear in the chat’s tools menu.

Claude Desktop’s JSON config file only starts local servers. Remote servers go through Connectors, and connectors you add on claude.ai show up here too.

### claude.ai

1. Open the connector form on claude.ai. This button fills in the name and URL for you:

[Add to claude.ai](<https://claude.ai/customize/connectors?modal=add-custom-connector&connectorName=GameDev.net&connectorUrl=https%3A%2F%2Fgamedev.net%2Fmcp%2F>) (opens connector settings)

2. Check that the URL reads `https://gamedev.net/mcp/` and click **Add**.

3. Turn it on in a chat from the tools menu.

Free plans allow one custom connector. On Team and Enterprise plans an owner adds it under **Organization settings → Connectors**.

### ChatGPT

1. On chatgpt.com, open **Settings → Security and login** and turn on **Developer mode**.

2. Go to `chatgpt.com/plugins` and click **+** to create an app for a remote MCP server.

3. Paste `https://gamedev.net/mcp/` as the server URL and choose **No authentication**.

Developer mode is available on the web for Plus, Pro, Business, Enterprise and Education accounts.

### Cursor

[Add to Cursor](<https://cursor.com/install-mcp?name=gamedev-net&config=eyJ1cmwiOiJodHRwczovL2dhbWVkZXYubmV0L21jcC8ifQ%3D%3D>) (opens Cursor)

Or add it by hand to `~/.cursor/mcp.json` (all projects) or `.cursor/mcp.json` (this project):

`mcp.json`:

```json
{
  "mcpServers": {
    "gamedev-net": {
      "url": "https://gamedev.net/mcp/"
    }
  }
}
```

### VS Code

[Install in VS Code](<https://vscode.dev/redirect/mcp/install?name=gamedev-net&config=%7B%22type%22%3A%22http%22%2C%22url%22%3A%22https%3A%2F%2Fgamedev.net%2Fmcp%2F%22%7D>) (opens VS Code)

Or from a terminal:

```bash
code --add-mcp '{"name":"gamedev-net","type":"http","url":"https://gamedev.net/mcp/"}'
```

Or commit it to the repo in `.vscode/mcp.json`:

`.vscode/mcp.json`:

```json
{
  "servers": {
    "gamedev-net": {
      "type": "http",
      "url": "https://gamedev.net/mcp/"
    }
  }
}
```

### Devin Desktop

1. Add it to `~/.config/devin/mcp_config.json` (macOS and Linux) or `%APPDATA%\devin\mcp_config.json` (Windows):

`mcp_config.json`:

```json
{
  "mcpServers": {
    "gamedev-net": {
      "serverUrl": "https://gamedev.net/mcp/"
    }
  }
}
```

2. Refresh the MCP server list in Cascade.

Devin Desktop is the new name for Windsurf. It reads `serverUrl` (or `url`) for remote servers.

### Codex

```bash
codex mcp add gamedev-net --url https://gamedev.net/mcp/
```

Or edit `~/.codex/config.toml` directly:

`config.toml`:

```toml
[mcp_servers.gamedev-net]
url = "https://gamedev.net/mcp/"
```

### Gemini CLI

```bash
gemini mcp add --transport http gamedev-net https://gamedev.net/mcp/
```

This adds it to the current project. Add `-s user` to use it everywhere.

### Any client

Most clients accept this shape. Some name the URL field differently: `serverUrl` in Devin Desktop, `httpUrl` in Gemini CLI’s settings file.

```json
{
  "mcpServers": {
    "gamedev-net": {
      "type": "http",
      "url": "https://gamedev.net/mcp/"
    }
  }
}
```

Zed puts servers under `context_servers` in its settings. Cline needs `"type": "streamableHttp"`, or it assumes SSE.

Client only starts local servers? Bridge it with `npx -y mcp-remote https://gamedev.net/mcp/`.
