# Google Developer Knowledge MCP server

> Search and retrieve official Google developer documentation for Firebase, Android, Google Cloud, Maps and more.

- Listing: https://mcp.tc/i/google-developer-knowledge
- Connect: use the server's own URL `https://developerknowledge.googleapis.com/mcp` (with your API key); clients connect to it directly. The listing link is a page, not an MCP endpoint.
- Type: remote (Streamable HTTP)
- Auth: API key
- Category: [Docs & Knowledge](https://mcp.tc/c/docs-knowledge)
- Vendor: Google
- Verified: yes, mcp.tc checked that this is the official server (https://mcp.tc/verify). It says who runs the server, not that it is safe.
- Homepage: <https://developers.google.com/knowledge/mcp>

## About

Connects an assistant to Google's public developer documentation corpus. It can search for relevant page excerpts, fetch the full Markdown of documents, and generate grounded answers. Covered products include Firebase, Android, Chrome, Flutter, Go, Google AI, Google Cloud and Google Maps Platform.

Runs as a hosted streamable HTTP endpoint at developerknowledge.googleapis.com/mcp. Most clients authenticate with a Google API key sent in the X-Goog-Api-Key header. OAuth 2.0 and Application Default Credentials are also supported. The answer\_query tool has a limited quota.

## What it can do

- Search Google developer documentation for relevant excerpts
- Fetch full Markdown content of up to 20 documents per call
- Get grounded answers drawn from the documentation corpus
- Cover Firebase, Android, Cloud, Maps, Flutter, Go and more

## Tools (3)

- `search_documents`: Search Google developer docs and return relevant excerpts with document names. (read-only)
- `answer_query`: Generate a grounded answer from the docs corpus; limited quota, returns references. (read-only)
- `get_documents`: Retrieve full content of up to 20 documents by name from search results. (read-only)

## Example prompts

- "Search Google docs for how to set up Firebase Authentication on Android"
- "How do I configure a Cloud Run service with a min instance count?"
- "Fetch the full Flutter documentation page on state management"
- "What changed in the latest Android Gradle plugin release notes?"

## Install

### Claude Code

1. Run this in a terminal, in your project folder:

```bash
claude mcp add --transport http google-developer-knowledge https://developerknowledge.googleapis.com/mcp
```

2. Start Claude Code and type `/mcp`. **google-developer-knowledge** should show as connected.

Google Developer Knowledge needs an API key. Google’s docs say which header carries it; most servers use `Authorization: Bearer <YOUR_API_KEY>`.

### Claude Desktop

1. Custom connectors can’t send this server’s key header, so use the `mcp-remote` bridge. Open **Settings → Developer → Edit Config** and add:

`claude_desktop_config.json`:

```json
{
  "mcpServers": {
    "google-developer-knowledge": {
      "command": "npx",
      "args": [
        "-y",
        "mcp-remote",
        "https://developerknowledge.googleapis.com/mcp"
      ]
    }
  }
}
```

2. Replace the placeholder with your key and restart Claude Desktop.

The bridge needs Node.js on your computer.

### Cursor

[Add to Cursor](<https://cursor.com/install-mcp?name=google-developer-knowledge&config=eyJ1cmwiOiJodHRwczovL2RldmVsb3Blcmtub3dsZWRnZS5nb29nbGVhcGlzLmNvbS9tY3AifQ%3D%3D>) (opens Cursor)

Or add it by hand to `~/.cursor/mcp.json` (all projects) or `.cursor/mcp.json` (this project):

`mcp.json`:

```json
{
  "mcpServers": {
    "google-developer-knowledge": {
      "url": "https://developerknowledge.googleapis.com/mcp"
    }
  }
}
```

Google Developer Knowledge needs an API key. Google’s docs say which header carries it; most servers use `Authorization: Bearer <YOUR_API_KEY>`.

### VS Code

[Install in VS Code](<https://vscode.dev/redirect/mcp/install?name=google-developer-knowledge&config=%7B%22type%22%3A%22http%22%2C%22url%22%3A%22https%3A%2F%2Fdeveloperknowledge.googleapis.com%2Fmcp%22%7D>) (opens VS Code)

Or from a terminal:

```bash
code --add-mcp '{"name":"google-developer-knowledge","type":"http","url":"https://developerknowledge.googleapis.com/mcp"}'
```

Or commit it to the repo in `.vscode/mcp.json`:

`.vscode/mcp.json`:

```json
{
  "servers": {
    "google-developer-knowledge": {
      "type": "http",
      "url": "https://developerknowledge.googleapis.com/mcp"
    }
  }
}
```

Google Developer Knowledge needs an API key. Google’s docs say which header carries it; most servers use `Authorization: Bearer <YOUR_API_KEY>`.

### Devin Desktop

1. Add it to `~/.config/devin/mcp_config.json` (macOS and Linux) or `%APPDATA%\devin\mcp_config.json` (Windows):

`mcp_config.json`:

```json
{
  "mcpServers": {
    "google-developer-knowledge": {
      "serverUrl": "https://developerknowledge.googleapis.com/mcp"
    }
  }
}
```

2. Refresh the MCP server list in Cascade.

Devin Desktop is the new name for Windsurf. It reads `serverUrl` (or `url`) for remote servers.

### Codex

```bash
codex mcp add google-developer-knowledge --url https://developerknowledge.googleapis.com/mcp
```

Or edit `~/.codex/config.toml` directly:

`config.toml`:

```toml
[mcp_servers.google-developer-knowledge]
url = "https://developerknowledge.googleapis.com/mcp"
```

Google Developer Knowledge needs an API key. Google’s docs say which header carries it; most servers use `Authorization: Bearer <YOUR_API_KEY>`.

### Gemini CLI

```bash
gemini mcp add --transport http google-developer-knowledge https://developerknowledge.googleapis.com/mcp
```

This adds it to the current project. Add `-s user` to use it everywhere.

### Any client

Most clients accept this shape. Some name the URL field differently: `serverUrl` in Devin Desktop, `httpUrl` in Gemini CLI’s settings file.

```json
{
  "mcpServers": {
    "google-developer-knowledge": {
      "type": "http",
      "url": "https://developerknowledge.googleapis.com/mcp"
    }
  }
}
```

Zed puts servers under `context_servers` in its settings. Cline needs `"type": "streamableHttp"`, or it assumes SSE.

Client only starts local servers? Bridge it with `npx -y mcp-remote https://developerknowledge.googleapis.com/mcp`.

Google Developer Knowledge needs an API key. Google’s docs say which header carries it; most servers use `Authorization: Bearer <YOUR_API_KEY>`.
