## About

A community-built server that connects an AI assistant to Google Workspace. It covers Gmail, Calendar, Drive, Docs, Sheets, Slides, Forms, Chat and Tasks, plus Google Programmable Search. You can search and send mail, manage events, edit documents and spreadsheets, build forms and read chat messages. It is not made by Google.

It runs locally over stdio with uvx (workspace-mcp) and can also be hosted over streamable HTTP. You need your own Google OAuth client ID and secret from Google Cloud Console, with the relevant Google APIs enabled. Users sign in with their Google account. Tool tiers and a read-only mode limit what the assistant can do.

## What it can do

- Search, draft and send Gmail messages
- Create and manage Google Calendar events
- Search, list and create files in Google Drive
- Edit Google Docs with structured styling and formatting
- Read, write and create Google Sheets
- Create and modify Google Slides presentations
- Build Google Forms and read responses
- Send and search Google Chat messages and manage Tasks

## Tools (10)

- `google_calendar`: Manage Google Calendar calendars and events.
- `google_drive`: Search, list and create files in Google Drive.
- `gmail`: Search, draft, send and respond to Gmail messages.
- `google_docs`: Search, extract, create and edit Google Docs with styling and batch generation.
- `google_sheets`: Read, write, modify and create Google Sheets.
- `google_slides`: Create and modify Google Slides presentations.
- `google_forms`: Create, retrieve and publish Google Forms and manage responses.
- `google_chat`: List, get, send and search messages in Chat spaces and DMs.
- `google_tasks`: Create and organize Google Tasks and task lists.
- `google_custom_search`: Run web searches through Google Programmable Search Engine.

## Example prompts

- "Find unread emails from my manager this week and draft replies"
- "Create a calendar event for Friday at 3pm with a Meet link"
- "Add a new row to my budget spreadsheet in Google Sheets"
- "Summarize the Google Doc called Q3 Planning"

## Install

### Claude Code

1. Run this in a terminal, in your project folder:

```bash
claude mcp add --transport stdio google-workspace -- uvx workspace-mcp --tool-tier core
```

2. Start Claude Code and type `/mcp`. **google-workspace** should show as connected.

Add `--scope user` to make it available in every project.

### Claude Desktop

1. Open **Settings → Developer → Edit Config**. It opens `claude_desktop_config.json`. Add:

`claude_desktop_config.json`:

```json
{
  "mcpServers": {
    "google-workspace": {
      "command": "uvx",
      "args": [
        "workspace-mcp",
        "--tool-tier",
        "core"
      ]
    }
  }
}
```

2. Save the file and restart Claude Desktop.

Needs uv (Python) on your computer. The file lives in `~/Library/Application Support/Claude/` on macOS and `%APPDATA%\Claude\` on Windows.

### Cursor

[Add to Cursor](<https://cursor.com/install-mcp?name=google-workspace&config=eyJjb21tYW5kIjoidXZ4IiwiYXJncyI6WyJ3b3Jrc3BhY2UtbWNwIiwiLS10b29sLXRpZXIiLCJjb3JlIl19>) (opens Cursor)

Or add it by hand to `~/.cursor/mcp.json` (all projects) or `.cursor/mcp.json` (this project):

`mcp.json`:

```json
{
  "mcpServers": {
    "google-workspace": {
      "command": "uvx",
      "args": [
        "workspace-mcp",
        "--tool-tier",
        "core"
      ]
    }
  }
}
```

Needs uv (Python) on your computer.

### VS Code

[Install in VS Code](<https://vscode.dev/redirect/mcp/install?name=google-workspace&config=%7B%22type%22%3A%22stdio%22%2C%22command%22%3A%22uvx%22%2C%22args%22%3A%5B%22workspace-mcp%22%2C%22--tool-tier%22%2C%22core%22%5D%7D>) (opens VS Code)

Or from a terminal:

```bash
code --add-mcp '{"name":"google-workspace","type":"stdio","command":"uvx","args":["workspace-mcp","--tool-tier","core"]}'
```

Or commit it to the repo in `.vscode/mcp.json`:

`.vscode/mcp.json`:

```json
{
  "servers": {
    "google-workspace": {
      "type": "stdio",
      "command": "uvx",
      "args": [
        "workspace-mcp",
        "--tool-tier",
        "core"
      ]
    }
  }
}
```

Needs uv (Python) on your computer.

### Devin Desktop

1. Add it to `~/.config/devin/mcp_config.json` (macOS and Linux) or `%APPDATA%\devin\mcp_config.json` (Windows):

`mcp_config.json`:

```json
{
  "mcpServers": {
    "google-workspace": {
      "command": "uvx",
      "args": [
        "workspace-mcp",
        "--tool-tier",
        "core"
      ]
    }
  }
}
```

2. Refresh the MCP server list in Cascade.

Devin Desktop is the new name for Windsurf.

### Codex

```bash
codex mcp add google-workspace -- uvx workspace-mcp --tool-tier core
```

Or edit `~/.codex/config.toml` directly:

`config.toml`:

```toml
[mcp_servers.google-workspace]
command = "uvx"
args = ["workspace-mcp", "--tool-tier", "core"]
```

Needs uv (Python) on your computer.

### Gemini CLI

```bash
gemini mcp add google-workspace uvx -- workspace-mcp --tool-tier core
```

This adds it to the current project. Add `-s user` to use it everywhere.

### Any client

Most clients that start local servers accept this shape:

```json
{
  "mcpServers": {
    "google-workspace": {
      "command": "uvx",
      "args": [
        "workspace-mcp",
        "--tool-tier",
        "core"
      ]
    }
  }
}
```

Zed puts servers under `context_servers` in its settings, with the same `command`, `args` and `env` fields.

Needs uv (Python) on your computer.
