# IDA Pro MCP server

> Reverse engineer binaries in IDA Pro: decompile, rename, comment and retype functions through your AI assistant.

- Listing: https://mcp.tc/i/ida-pro
- Connect: this is a local (stdio) server; install it on your machine (see Install). The listing link is a page, not an MCP endpoint.
- Type: local (stdio)
- Auth: no API key needed
- Category: [Security & Compliance](https://mcp.tc/c/security)
- Vendor: mrexodia
- Homepage: <https://github.com/mrexodia/ida-pro-mcp>
- Repository: <https://github.com/mrexodia/ida-pro-mcp>
- Package: pypi `ida-pro-mcp`

## About

Connects an AI assistant to IDA Pro for reverse engineering. The assistant can read decompiler output and disassembly, add comments, rename variables and functions, and change types in the database. It also provides an integer conversion tool so the model does not convert number bases itself.

It runs locally over stdio with uv (uv run idalib-mcp --stdio) and uses idalib, so IDA Pro 9 with idalib activated is required. IDA Free is not supported. No API key or sign-in is needed. The maintainer now recommends the official Hex-Rays IDA MCP server as an alternative.

## What it can do

- Inspect decompiled and disassembled functions
- Add comments to the IDA database
- Rename variables and functions
- Change variable, argument and pointer types
- Convert integers between bases with a dedicated tool
- Install as a Claude Code or Codex plugin

## Example prompts

- "Decompile the main function and add comments explaining what it does"
- "Rename the variables in this function to sensible names based on how they are used"
- "Analyze this crackme and write a report.md with your findings"
- "Fix the argument types of sub\_401000 and update its name to match its purpose"

## Install

### Claude Code

1. Run this in a terminal, in your project folder:

```bash
claude mcp add --transport stdio ida-pro -- uv run idalib-mcp --stdio
```

2. Start Claude Code and type `/mcp`. **ida-pro** should show as connected.

Add `--scope user` to make it available in every project.

### Claude Desktop

1. Open **Settings → Developer → Edit Config**. It opens `claude_desktop_config.json`. Add:

`claude_desktop_config.json`:

```json
{
  "mcpServers": {
    "ida-pro": {
      "command": "uv",
      "args": [
        "run",
        "idalib-mcp",
        "--stdio"
      ]
    }
  }
}
```

2. Save the file and restart Claude Desktop.

The file lives in `~/Library/Application Support/Claude/` on macOS and `%APPDATA%\Claude\` on Windows.

### Cursor

[Add to Cursor](<https://cursor.com/install-mcp?name=ida-pro&config=eyJjb21tYW5kIjoidXYiLCJhcmdzIjpbInJ1biIsImlkYWxpYi1tY3AiLCItLXN0ZGlvIl19>) (opens Cursor)

Or add it by hand to `~/.cursor/mcp.json` (all projects) or `.cursor/mcp.json` (this project):

`mcp.json`:

```json
{
  "mcpServers": {
    "ida-pro": {
      "command": "uv",
      "args": [
        "run",
        "idalib-mcp",
        "--stdio"
      ]
    }
  }
}
```

### VS Code

[Install in VS Code](<https://vscode.dev/redirect/mcp/install?name=ida-pro&config=%7B%22type%22%3A%22stdio%22%2C%22command%22%3A%22uv%22%2C%22args%22%3A%5B%22run%22%2C%22idalib-mcp%22%2C%22--stdio%22%5D%7D>) (opens VS Code)

Or from a terminal:

```bash
code --add-mcp '{"name":"ida-pro","type":"stdio","command":"uv","args":["run","idalib-mcp","--stdio"]}'
```

Or commit it to the repo in `.vscode/mcp.json`:

`.vscode/mcp.json`:

```json
{
  "servers": {
    "ida-pro": {
      "type": "stdio",
      "command": "uv",
      "args": [
        "run",
        "idalib-mcp",
        "--stdio"
      ]
    }
  }
}
```

### Devin Desktop

1. Add it to `~/.config/devin/mcp_config.json` (macOS and Linux) or `%APPDATA%\devin\mcp_config.json` (Windows):

`mcp_config.json`:

```json
{
  "mcpServers": {
    "ida-pro": {
      "command": "uv",
      "args": [
        "run",
        "idalib-mcp",
        "--stdio"
      ]
    }
  }
}
```

2. Refresh the MCP server list in Cascade.

Devin Desktop is the new name for Windsurf.

### Codex

```bash
codex mcp add ida-pro -- uv run idalib-mcp --stdio
```

Or edit `~/.codex/config.toml` directly:

`config.toml`:

```toml
[mcp_servers.ida-pro]
command = "uv"
args = ["run", "idalib-mcp", "--stdio"]
```

### Gemini CLI

```bash
gemini mcp add ida-pro uv -- run idalib-mcp --stdio
```

This adds it to the current project. Add `-s user` to use it everywhere.

### Any client

Most clients that start local servers accept this shape:

```json
{
  "mcpServers": {
    "ida-pro": {
      "command": "uv",
      "args": [
        "run",
        "idalib-mcp",
        "--stdio"
      ]
    }
  }
}
```

Zed puts servers under `context_servers` in its settings, with the same `command`, `args` and `env` fields.
