# Jina AI MCP server

> Read URLs as markdown, search the web, arXiv and SSRN, and rerank or deduplicate text with Jina APIs.

- Listing: https://mcp.tc/i/jina
- Connect: use the server's own URL `https://mcp.jina.ai/v1` (sign-in optional); clients connect to it directly. The listing link is a page, not an MCP endpoint.
- Type: remote (Streamable HTTP)
- Auth: optional (works without sign-in)
- Category: [Search & Web Data](https://mcp.tc/c/search-web)
- Vendor: Jina AI
- Homepage: <https://github.com/jina-ai/MCP>
- Repository: <https://github.com/jina-ai/MCP>

## About

Connects an assistant to Jina's Reader, Search, Embeddings and Reranker APIs. It can fetch a web page or PDF as markdown (optionally returning only passages that answer a question), search the web, images, arXiv, SSRN and the Jina blog, take page screenshots, guess a page's publish date, and rerank or deduplicate text.

Runs as a hosted streamable HTTP endpoint at https://mcp.jina.ai/v1. Some tools work without a key at lower rate limits; others, such as web search and reranking, need a Jina API key sent as a Bearer token in the Authorization header. Clients without remote MCP support can use the mcp-remote proxy.

## What it can do

- Read web pages and PDFs as markdown
- Pull only passages that answer a question from a page
- Search the web, images, arXiv and SSRN
- Search Jina's news and blog
- Capture page screenshots
- Guess a page's publish or update date
- Rerank documents and drop near-duplicate strings
- Extract figures, tables and equations from PDFs

## Tools (12)

- `primer`: Get current time, user location and network environment for the session.
- `guess_datetime_url`: Guess when a page was published or updated, with a confidence score.
- `capture_screenshot_url`: Screenshot a page as a base64 JPEG.
- `read_url`: Fetch a page or PDF as markdown, optionally only passages answering a question.
- `search_web`: Search the web and return titles, URLs and snippets.
- `search_arxiv`: Search arXiv preprints.
- `search_ssrn`: Search SSRN working papers in social science, economics, law and finance.
- `search_jina_blog`: Search Jina AI news and blog posts.
- `search_images`: Search the web for images.
- `sort_by_relevance`: Rerank documents by relevance to a query with Jina Reranker.
- `deduplicate_strings`: Select the top-k semantically distinct strings from a list.
- `extract_pdf`: Extract figures, tables and equations from a PDF by arXiv id or URL.

## Example prompts

- "Read this URL and tell me what it says about rate limits."
- "Search arXiv for recent papers on late interaction retrieval."
- "Find the top web results for the latest Node.js LTS release."
- "Rerank these ten snippets by relevance to my question."

## Install

### Claude Code

1. Run this in a terminal, in your project folder:

```bash
claude mcp add --transport http jina https://mcp.jina.ai/v1
```

2. Start Claude Code and type `/mcp`. **jina** should show as connected. To sign in for more access, pick it and choose **Authenticate**.

Add `--scope user` to make it available in every project, not just this one.

### Claude Desktop

1. Open **Settings → Connectors** and click **Add custom connector**.

2. Name it **Jina AI** and paste this URL:

```url
https://mcp.jina.ai/v1
```

3. Click **Add**, then **Connect**. Signing in to Jina AI is optional.

Claude Desktop’s JSON config file only starts local servers. Remote servers go through Connectors, and connectors you add on claude.ai show up here too.

### claude.ai

1. Open the connector form on claude.ai. This button fills in the name and URL for you:

[Add to claude.ai](<https://claude.ai/customize/connectors?modal=add-custom-connector&connectorName=Jina%20AI&connectorUrl=https%3A%2F%2Fmcp.jina.ai%2Fv1>) (opens connector settings)

2. Check that the URL reads `https://mcp.jina.ai/v1` and click **Add**.

3. Click **Connect**. Signing in to Jina AI is optional.

Free plans allow one custom connector. On Team and Enterprise plans an owner adds it under **Organization settings → Connectors**.

### ChatGPT

1. On chatgpt.com, open **Settings → Security and login** and turn on **Developer mode**.

2. Go to `chatgpt.com/plugins` and click **+** to create an app for a remote MCP server.

3. Paste `https://mcp.jina.ai/v1` as the server URL and choose **No authentication**, or **OAuth** to sign in to Jina AI for more access.

Developer mode is available on the web for Plus, Pro, Business, Enterprise and Education accounts.

### Cursor

[Add to Cursor](<https://cursor.com/install-mcp?name=jina&config=eyJ1cmwiOiJodHRwczovL21jcC5qaW5hLmFpL3YxIn0%3D>) (opens Cursor)

Or add it by hand to `~/.cursor/mcp.json` (all projects) or `.cursor/mcp.json` (this project):

`mcp.json`:

```json
{
  "mcpServers": {
    "jina": {
      "url": "https://mcp.jina.ai/v1"
    }
  }
}
```

### VS Code

[Install in VS Code](<https://vscode.dev/redirect/mcp/install?name=jina&config=%7B%22type%22%3A%22http%22%2C%22url%22%3A%22https%3A%2F%2Fmcp.jina.ai%2Fv1%22%7D>) (opens VS Code)

Or from a terminal:

```bash
code --add-mcp '{"name":"jina","type":"http","url":"https://mcp.jina.ai/v1"}'
```

Or commit it to the repo in `.vscode/mcp.json`:

`.vscode/mcp.json`:

```json
{
  "servers": {
    "jina": {
      "type": "http",
      "url": "https://mcp.jina.ai/v1"
    }
  }
}
```

### Devin Desktop

1. Add it to `~/.config/devin/mcp_config.json` (macOS and Linux) or `%APPDATA%\devin\mcp_config.json` (Windows):

`mcp_config.json`:

```json
{
  "mcpServers": {
    "jina": {
      "serverUrl": "https://mcp.jina.ai/v1"
    }
  }
}
```

2. Refresh the MCP server list in Cascade.

Devin Desktop is the new name for Windsurf. It reads `serverUrl` (or `url`) for remote servers.

### Codex

```bash
codex mcp add jina --url https://mcp.jina.ai/v1
```

Or edit `~/.codex/config.toml` directly:

`config.toml`:

```toml
[mcp_servers.jina]
url = "https://mcp.jina.ai/v1"
```

### Gemini CLI

```bash
gemini mcp add --transport http jina https://mcp.jina.ai/v1
```

Then, inside Gemini CLI, run `/mcp auth jina` to sign in (optional).

This adds it to the current project. Add `-s user` to use it everywhere.

### Any client

Most clients accept this shape. Some name the URL field differently: `serverUrl` in Devin Desktop, `httpUrl` in Gemini CLI’s settings file.

```json
{
  "mcpServers": {
    "jina": {
      "type": "http",
      "url": "https://mcp.jina.ai/v1"
    }
  }
}
```

Zed puts servers under `context_servers` in its settings. Cline needs `"type": "streamableHttp"`, or it assumes SSE.

Client only starts local servers? Bridge it with `npx -y mcp-remote https://mcp.jina.ai/v1`.
