## About

Macfax covers the used-Mac market. It aggregates quality-gated live listings from eBay, Craigslist, OfferUp, Swappa, Facebook and Reddit, and gives sale and asking price statistics per exact configuration. It can resolve a Mac serial number to its model, run a trust check on a single listing, fetch verified condition reports, and set up email alerts for new matching listings. Sold and asking prices are kept as separate labeled slices, and each listing links back to its source marketplace.

The hosted endpoint is a remote streamable-HTTP server and needs no sign-in or API key. A stdio wrapper is available through npx (macfax-mcp). Serial resolution is the only metered tool. A free API key raises the rate limits and can be set as MACFAX\_API\_KEY.

## What it can do

- Search live used-Mac listings filtered by chip, RAM, storage, year and price
- Get sale estimates and asking-price bands for an exact configuration
- Look up what an Apple Silicon model is worth by its Apple name
- Resolve a Mac serial number, including 2021+ randomized serials, to its model
- Check a listing URL for scam flags, ask versus typical price and seller signals
- Fetch verified Macfax condition reports with Activation Lock and MDM checks
- Create email alerts for new matching listings, confirmed by the email owner
- Check remaining serial resolution credits

## Tools (8)

- `lookup_mac_serial`: Resolve a Mac serial to its exact model, market value and whether a verified report exists. (read-only)
- `get_mac_price_stats`: Get sale estimate and asking band for a used Mac configuration, with per-channel medians. (read-only)
- `get_mac_market_value`: Get sale estimates and asking bands for every configuration matching an Apple model name. (read-only)
- `search_mac_listings`: Search filtered live used-Mac listings across six marketplaces, with deep links. (read-only)
- `check_mac_listing`: Show the trust picture for one listing: flags, ask versus typical band, seller signals. (read-only)
- `get_mac_report`: Fetch a verified Macfax condition report with identity, Activation Lock and MDM checks. (read-only)
- `create_mac_alert`: Create an email alert for new listings matching a configuration; the email owner must confirm.
- `get_macfax_credit_balance`: Report remaining serial resolution credits and what costs a credit. (read-only)

## Example prompts

- "Find M2 MacBook Air listings under $800 with 16GB RAM"
- "Is this eBay listing for a MacBook Pro trustworthy? URL: https://www.ebay.com/itm/123"
- "Look up the model for Mac serial number YOUR\_SERIAL"

## Install

### Claude Code

1. Run this in a terminal, in your project folder:

```bash
claude mcp add --transport http macfax https://macfax.com/mcp
```

2. Start Claude Code and type `/mcp`. **macfax** should show as connected.

Add `--scope user` to make it available in every project, not just this one.

### Claude Desktop

1. Open **Customize → Connectors**, click **+ Add**, then **Add custom connector**.

2. Name it **Macfax** and paste this URL:

```url
https://macfax.com/mcp
```

3. Click **Add**. Its tools appear in the chat’s tools menu.

Claude Desktop’s JSON config file only starts local servers. Remote servers go through Connectors, and connectors you add on claude.ai show up here too.

### claude.ai

1. Open the connector form on claude.ai. This button fills in the name and URL for you:

[Add to claude.ai](<https://claude.ai/customize/connectors?modal=add-custom-connector&connectorName=Macfax&connectorUrl=https%3A%2F%2Fmacfax.com%2Fmcp>) (opens connector settings)

2. Check that the URL reads `https://macfax.com/mcp` and click **Add**.

3. Turn it on in a chat from the tools menu.

Free plans allow one custom connector. On Team and Enterprise plans an owner adds it under **Organization settings → Connectors**.

### ChatGPT

1. On chatgpt.com, open **Settings → Security and login** and turn on **Developer mode**.

2. Go to `chatgpt.com/plugins` and click **+** to create an app for a remote MCP server.

3. Paste `https://macfax.com/mcp` as the server URL and choose **No authentication**.

Developer mode is available on the web for Plus, Pro, Business, Enterprise and Education accounts.

### Cursor

[Add to Cursor](<https://cursor.com/install-mcp?name=macfax&config=eyJ1cmwiOiJodHRwczovL21hY2ZheC5jb20vbWNwIn0%3D>) (opens Cursor)

Or add it by hand to `~/.cursor/mcp.json` (all projects) or `.cursor/mcp.json` (this project):

`mcp.json`:

```json
{
  "mcpServers": {
    "macfax": {
      "url": "https://macfax.com/mcp"
    }
  }
}
```

### VS Code

[Install in VS Code](<https://vscode.dev/redirect/mcp/install?name=macfax&config=%7B%22type%22%3A%22http%22%2C%22url%22%3A%22https%3A%2F%2Fmacfax.com%2Fmcp%22%7D>) (opens VS Code)

Or from a terminal:

```bash
code --add-mcp '{"name":"macfax","type":"http","url":"https://macfax.com/mcp"}'
```

Or commit it to the repo in `.vscode/mcp.json`:

`.vscode/mcp.json`:

```json
{
  "servers": {
    "macfax": {
      "type": "http",
      "url": "https://macfax.com/mcp"
    }
  }
}
```

### Devin Desktop

1. Add it to `~/.config/devin/mcp_config.json` (macOS and Linux) or `%APPDATA%\devin\mcp_config.json` (Windows):

`mcp_config.json`:

```json
{
  "mcpServers": {
    "macfax": {
      "serverUrl": "https://macfax.com/mcp"
    }
  }
}
```

2. Refresh the MCP server list in Cascade.

Devin Desktop is the new name for Windsurf. It reads `serverUrl` (or `url`) for remote servers.

### Codex

```bash
codex mcp add macfax --url https://macfax.com/mcp
```

Or edit `~/.codex/config.toml` directly:

`config.toml`:

```toml
[mcp_servers.macfax]
url = "https://macfax.com/mcp"
```

### Gemini CLI

```bash
gemini mcp add --transport http macfax https://macfax.com/mcp
```

This adds it to the current project. Add `-s user` to use it everywhere.

### Any client

Most clients accept this shape. Some name the URL field differently: `serverUrl` in Devin Desktop, `httpUrl` in Gemini CLI’s settings file.

```json
{
  "mcpServers": {
    "macfax": {
      "type": "http",
      "url": "https://macfax.com/mcp"
    }
  }
}
```

Zed puts servers under `context_servers` in its settings. Cline needs `"type": "streamableHttp"`, or it assumes SSE.

Client only starts local servers? Bridge it with `npx -y mcp-remote https://macfax.com/mcp`.
