# Microsoft Fabric MCP server

> Give AI agents Microsoft Fabric API specs, item schemas and best practices, plus OneLake file and Data Factory tools.

- Type: local (stdio)
- Auth: no API key needed
- Category: [Data & Analytics](https://mcp.tc/c/analytics)
- Vendor: Microsoft
- Verified: yes, mcp.tc checked that this is the official server (https://mcp.tc/verify). It says who runs the server, not that it is safe.

## About

Microsoft Fabric MCP Server packages Fabric's public OpenAPI specifications, item definition schemas (lakehouses, pipelines, semantic models, notebooks and others) and recommended patterns such as pagination and error handling into context for coding agents. It also includes OneLake data operations and Data Factory pipeline and Dataflow Gen2 tools.

It runs locally as a stdio server through npx (@microsoft/fabric-mcp), as a NuGet package (Microsoft.Fabric.Mcp), as a VS Code extension, or built from source with the .NET 10 SDK. The API and schema context works without connecting to a live Fabric environment. Node.js LTS is needed for the npx option.

## What it can do

- Look up Fabric item types and their OpenAPI specifications
- Read JSON definition schemas for Fabric items
- Get best practices and examples for Fabric API usage
- Work with OneLake files, shortcuts, settings and data access roles
- Manage Data Factory pipelines and Dataflow Gen2
- Search the OneLake catalog

## Tools (3)

- `microsoft_docs_search`: Search official Microsoft/Azure documentation to find the most relevant and trustworthy content for a user's query. (read-only)
- `microsoft_code_sample_search`: Search for code snippets and examples in official Microsoft Learn documentation. (read-only)
- `microsoft_docs_fetch`: Fetch and convert a Microsoft Learn documentation webpage to markdown format. (read-only)

## Example prompts

- "What Fabric item types are available?"
- "Show the definition schema for a Fabric semantic model."
- "Search the OneLake catalog for items related to sales."
- "What are the best practices for paginating Fabric API results?"

## Install

### Claude Code

1. Run this in a terminal, in your project folder:

```bash
claude mcp add --transport stdio microsoft-fabric -- npx -y @microsoft/fabric-mcp@latest server start --mode all
```

2. Start Claude Code and type `/mcp`. **microsoft-fabric** should show as connected.

Add `--scope user` to make it available in every project.

### Claude Desktop

1. Open **Settings → Developer → Edit Config**. It opens `claude_desktop_config.json`. Add:

`claude_desktop_config.json`:

```json
{
  "mcpServers": {
    "microsoft-fabric": {
      "command": "npx",
      "args": [
        "-y",
        "@microsoft/fabric-mcp@latest",
        "server",
        "start",
        "--mode",
        "all"
      ]
    }
  }
}
```

2. Save the file and restart Claude Desktop.

Needs Node.js on your computer. The file lives in `~/Library/Application Support/Claude/` on macOS and `%APPDATA%\Claude\` on Windows.

### Cursor

[Add to Cursor](<https://cursor.com/install-mcp?name=microsoft-fabric&config=eyJjb21tYW5kIjoibnB4IiwiYXJncyI6WyIteSIsIkBtaWNyb3NvZnQvZmFicmljLW1jcEBsYXRlc3QiLCJzZXJ2ZXIiLCJzdGFydCIsIi0tbW9kZSIsImFsbCJdfQ%3D%3D>) (opens Cursor)

Or add it by hand to `~/.cursor/mcp.json` (all projects) or `.cursor/mcp.json` (this project):

`mcp.json`:

```json
{
  "mcpServers": {
    "microsoft-fabric": {
      "command": "npx",
      "args": [
        "-y",
        "@microsoft/fabric-mcp@latest",
        "server",
        "start",
        "--mode",
        "all"
      ]
    }
  }
}
```

Needs Node.js on your computer.

### VS Code

[Install in VS Code](<https://vscode.dev/redirect/mcp/install?name=microsoft-fabric&config=%7B%22type%22%3A%22stdio%22%2C%22command%22%3A%22npx%22%2C%22args%22%3A%5B%22-y%22%2C%22%40microsoft%2Ffabric-mcp%40latest%22%2C%22server%22%2C%22start%22%2C%22--mode%22%2C%22all%22%5D%7D>) (opens VS Code)

Or from a terminal:

```bash
code --add-mcp '{"name":"microsoft-fabric","type":"stdio","command":"npx","args":["-y","@microsoft/fabric-mcp@latest","server","start","--mode","all"]}'
```

Or commit it to the repo in `.vscode/mcp.json`:

`.vscode/mcp.json`:

```json
{
  "servers": {
    "microsoft-fabric": {
      "type": "stdio",
      "command": "npx",
      "args": [
        "-y",
        "@microsoft/fabric-mcp@latest",
        "server",
        "start",
        "--mode",
        "all"
      ]
    }
  }
}
```

Needs Node.js on your computer.

### Devin Desktop

1. Add it to `~/.config/devin/mcp_config.json` (macOS and Linux) or `%APPDATA%\devin\mcp_config.json` (Windows):

`mcp_config.json`:

```json
{
  "mcpServers": {
    "microsoft-fabric": {
      "command": "npx",
      "args": [
        "-y",
        "@microsoft/fabric-mcp@latest",
        "server",
        "start",
        "--mode",
        "all"
      ]
    }
  }
}
```

2. Refresh the MCP server list in Cascade.

Devin Desktop is the new name for Windsurf.

### Codex

```bash
codex mcp add microsoft-fabric -- npx -y @microsoft/fabric-mcp@latest server start --mode all
```

Or edit `~/.codex/config.toml` directly:

`config.toml`:

```toml
[mcp_servers.microsoft-fabric]
command = "npx"
args = ["-y", "@microsoft/fabric-mcp@latest", "server", "start", "--mode", "all"]
```

Needs Node.js on your computer.

### Gemini CLI

```bash
gemini mcp add microsoft-fabric npx -- -y @microsoft/fabric-mcp@latest server start --mode all
```

This adds it to the current project. Add `-s user` to use it everywhere.

### Any client

Most clients that start local servers accept this shape:

```json
{
  "mcpServers": {
    "microsoft-fabric": {
      "command": "npx",
      "args": [
        "-y",
        "@microsoft/fabric-mcp@latest",
        "server",
        "start",
        "--mode",
        "all"
      ]
    }
  }
}
```

Zed puts servers under `context_servers` in its settings, with the same `command`, `args` and `env` fields.

Needs Node.js on your computer.
