## About

n8n-MCP gives an AI assistant structured access to n8n node documentation, properties, operations and workflow templates. It can search nodes, validate node and workflow configurations, and, when connected to an n8n instance, create, update, test and manage workflows, executions, credentials and data tables.

It runs locally over stdio with npx n8n-mcp. Documentation tools work without credentials. Workflow management needs N8N\_API\_URL and N8N\_API\_KEY from your n8n instance. Set MCP\_MODE=stdio for Claude Desktop. Anonymous telemetry is on by default and can be disabled. A hosted version also exists with a free tier. This is a community project, not made by n8n GmbH.

## What it can do

- Search n8n nodes and read their properties and documentation
- Find and deploy workflow templates from n8n.io
- Validate nodes and full workflows, including connections and expressions
- Create, update, list and delete workflows on your n8n instance
- Autofix common workflow validation errors
- Test workflows and manage executions and version history
- Manage n8n data tables and credentials
- Run a security audit of an n8n instance

## Example prompts

- "Find n8n nodes for sending Slack messages and show their properties"
- "Search templates for a webhook to Google Sheets workflow"
- "Validate this n8n workflow and fix any errors"
- "Create a workflow on my n8n instance that posts RSS items to Slack"

## Install

### Claude Code

1. Run this in a terminal, in your project folder:

```bash
claude mcp add --transport stdio n8n-mcp -- npx n8n-mcp
```

2. Start Claude Code and type `/mcp`. **n8n-mcp** should show as connected.

Add `--scope user` to make it available in every project.

### Claude Desktop

1. Open **Settings → Developer → Edit Config**. It opens `claude_desktop_config.json`. Add:

`claude_desktop_config.json`:

```json
{
  "mcpServers": {
    "n8n-mcp": {
      "command": "npx",
      "args": [
        "n8n-mcp"
      ]
    }
  }
}
```

2. Save the file and restart Claude Desktop.

Needs Node.js on your computer. The file lives in `~/Library/Application Support/Claude/` on macOS and `%APPDATA%\Claude\` on Windows.

### Cursor

[Add to Cursor](<https://cursor.com/install-mcp?name=n8n-mcp&config=eyJjb21tYW5kIjoibnB4IiwiYXJncyI6WyJuOG4tbWNwIl19>) (opens Cursor)

Or add it by hand to `~/.cursor/mcp.json` (all projects) or `.cursor/mcp.json` (this project):

`mcp.json`:

```json
{
  "mcpServers": {
    "n8n-mcp": {
      "command": "npx",
      "args": [
        "n8n-mcp"
      ]
    }
  }
}
```

Needs Node.js on your computer.

### VS Code

[Install in VS Code](<https://vscode.dev/redirect/mcp/install?name=n8n-mcp&config=%7B%22type%22%3A%22stdio%22%2C%22command%22%3A%22npx%22%2C%22args%22%3A%5B%22n8n-mcp%22%5D%7D>) (opens VS Code)

Or from a terminal:

```bash
code --add-mcp '{"name":"n8n-mcp","type":"stdio","command":"npx","args":["n8n-mcp"]}'
```

Or commit it to the repo in `.vscode/mcp.json`:

`.vscode/mcp.json`:

```json
{
  "servers": {
    "n8n-mcp": {
      "type": "stdio",
      "command": "npx",
      "args": [
        "n8n-mcp"
      ]
    }
  }
}
```

Needs Node.js on your computer.

### Devin Desktop

1. Add it to `~/.config/devin/mcp_config.json` (macOS and Linux) or `%APPDATA%\devin\mcp_config.json` (Windows):

`mcp_config.json`:

```json
{
  "mcpServers": {
    "n8n-mcp": {
      "command": "npx",
      "args": [
        "n8n-mcp"
      ]
    }
  }
}
```

2. Refresh the MCP server list in Cascade.

Devin Desktop is the new name for Windsurf.

### Codex

```bash
codex mcp add n8n-mcp -- npx n8n-mcp
```

Or edit `~/.codex/config.toml` directly:

`config.toml`:

```toml
[mcp_servers.n8n-mcp]
command = "npx"
args = ["n8n-mcp"]
```

Needs Node.js on your computer.

### Gemini CLI

```bash
gemini mcp add n8n-mcp npx n8n-mcp
```

This adds it to the current project. Add `-s user` to use it everywhere.

### Any client

Most clients that start local servers accept this shape:

```json
{
  "mcpServers": {
    "n8n-mcp": {
      "command": "npx",
      "args": [
        "n8n-mcp"
      ]
    }
  }
}
```

Zed puts servers under `context_servers` in its settings, with the same `command`, `args` and `env` fields.

Needs Node.js on your computer.
