# Redis MCP server

> Read and write Redis data structures, vector search indexes and streams in natural language.

- Listing: https://mcp.tc/i/redis
- Connect: this is a local (stdio) server; install it on your machine (see Install). The listing link is a page, not an MCP endpoint.
- Type: local (stdio)
- Auth: no API key needed
- Category: [Databases & Backend](https://mcp.tc/c/databases)
- Vendor: Redis
- Verified: yes, mcp.tc checked that this is the official server (https://mcp.tc/verify). It says who runs the server, not that it is safe.

- Repository: <https://github.com/redis/mcp-redis>
- Package: pypi `redis-mcp-server`

## About

Connects an assistant to a Redis database to manage and search its data. It covers strings, hashes, lists, sets, sorted sets, JSON documents, streams with consumer groups, and pub/sub. It also has query engine tools for vector indexes and search, a server information tool, and a docs search tool.

Runs locally over stdio as the PyPI package redis-mcp-server, started with uvx. Point the --url argument at your instance, using redis:// or rediss:// for TLS. Credentials go in the URL if your instance needs them. No separate sign-in to the server is needed.

## What it can do

- Set and get strings with expiration
- Store and read hashes, lists, sets and sorted sets
- Add, read and acknowledge entries in streams and consumer groups
- Store and edit JSON documents by path
- Publish and subscribe to pub/sub channels
- Manage vector indexes and run vector search
- Search Redis documentation and get database server info

## Example prompts

- "Store this session in Redis with a 30 minute expiration"
- "Add this conversation to a Redis stream called chat-log"
- "Create a vector index and search it for similar items"
- "Show the top 10 entries in my leaderboard sorted set"

## Install

### Claude Code

1. Run this in a terminal, in your project folder:

```bash
claude mcp add --transport stdio redis -- uvx --from redis-mcp-server@latest redis-mcp-server --url redis://localhost:6379/0
```

2. Start Claude Code and type `/mcp`. **redis** should show as connected.

Add `--scope user` to make it available in every project.

### Claude Desktop

1. Open **Settings → Developer → Edit Config**. It opens `claude_desktop_config.json`. Add:

`claude_desktop_config.json`:

```json
{
  "mcpServers": {
    "redis": {
      "command": "uvx",
      "args": [
        "--from",
        "redis-mcp-server@latest",
        "redis-mcp-server",
        "--url",
        "redis://localhost:6379/0"
      ]
    }
  }
}
```

2. Save the file and restart Claude Desktop.

Needs uv (Python) on your computer. The file lives in `~/Library/Application Support/Claude/` on macOS and `%APPDATA%\Claude\` on Windows.

### Cursor

[Add to Cursor](<https://cursor.com/install-mcp?name=redis&config=eyJjb21tYW5kIjoidXZ4IiwiYXJncyI6WyItLWZyb20iLCJyZWRpcy1tY3Atc2VydmVyQGxhdGVzdCIsInJlZGlzLW1jcC1zZXJ2ZXIiLCItLXVybCIsInJlZGlzOi8vbG9jYWxob3N0OjYzNzkvMCJdfQ%3D%3D>) (opens Cursor)

Or add it by hand to `~/.cursor/mcp.json` (all projects) or `.cursor/mcp.json` (this project):

`mcp.json`:

```json
{
  "mcpServers": {
    "redis": {
      "command": "uvx",
      "args": [
        "--from",
        "redis-mcp-server@latest",
        "redis-mcp-server",
        "--url",
        "redis://localhost:6379/0"
      ]
    }
  }
}
```

Needs uv (Python) on your computer.

### VS Code

[Install in VS Code](<https://vscode.dev/redirect/mcp/install?name=redis&config=%7B%22type%22%3A%22stdio%22%2C%22command%22%3A%22uvx%22%2C%22args%22%3A%5B%22--from%22%2C%22redis-mcp-server%40latest%22%2C%22redis-mcp-server%22%2C%22--url%22%2C%22redis%3A%2F%2Flocalhost%3A6379%2F0%22%5D%7D>) (opens VS Code)

Or from a terminal:

```bash
code --add-mcp '{"name":"redis","type":"stdio","command":"uvx","args":["--from","redis-mcp-server@latest","redis-mcp-server","--url","redis://localhost:6379/0"]}'
```

Or commit it to the repo in `.vscode/mcp.json`:

`.vscode/mcp.json`:

```json
{
  "servers": {
    "redis": {
      "type": "stdio",
      "command": "uvx",
      "args": [
        "--from",
        "redis-mcp-server@latest",
        "redis-mcp-server",
        "--url",
        "redis://localhost:6379/0"
      ]
    }
  }
}
```

Needs uv (Python) on your computer.

### Devin Desktop

1. Add it to `~/.config/devin/mcp_config.json` (macOS and Linux) or `%APPDATA%\devin\mcp_config.json` (Windows):

`mcp_config.json`:

```json
{
  "mcpServers": {
    "redis": {
      "command": "uvx",
      "args": [
        "--from",
        "redis-mcp-server@latest",
        "redis-mcp-server",
        "--url",
        "redis://localhost:6379/0"
      ]
    }
  }
}
```

2. Refresh the MCP server list in Cascade.

Devin Desktop is the new name for Windsurf.

### Codex

```bash
codex mcp add redis -- uvx --from redis-mcp-server@latest redis-mcp-server --url redis://localhost:6379/0
```

Or edit `~/.codex/config.toml` directly:

`config.toml`:

```toml
[mcp_servers.redis]
command = "uvx"
args = ["--from", "redis-mcp-server@latest", "redis-mcp-server", "--url", "redis://localhost:6379/0"]
```

Needs uv (Python) on your computer.

### Gemini CLI

```bash
gemini mcp add redis uvx -- --from redis-mcp-server@latest redis-mcp-server --url redis://localhost:6379/0
```

This adds it to the current project. Add `-s user` to use it everywhere.

### Any client

Most clients that start local servers accept this shape:

```json
{
  "mcpServers": {
    "redis": {
      "command": "uvx",
      "args": [
        "--from",
        "redis-mcp-server@latest",
        "redis-mcp-server",
        "--url",
        "redis://localhost:6379/0"
      ]
    }
  }
}
```

Zed puts servers under `context_servers` in its settings, with the same `command`, `args` and `env` fields.

Needs uv (Python) on your computer.
