# Topos MCP server

> Measure complexity, coupling, risky data flows and agent cognitive load in code, and get concrete targets from SLOP to PLATINUM.

- Listing: https://mcp.tc/i/topos
- Connect: this is a local (stdio) server; install it on your machine (see Install). The listing link is a page, not an MCP endpoint.
- Type: local (stdio)
- Auth: no API key needed
- Category: [Developer Tools](https://mcp.tc/c/developer-tools)
- Vendor: Krv-Labs
- Repository: <https://github.com/Krv-Labs/topos>
- Package: pypi `topos-mcp`

## About

Topos analyzes program structure and gives coding agents a quality signal they can act on. Each file gets four verdicts: Simple, Composable, Secure and Navigable. These roll up into a medal from SLOP to PLATINUM, with failure locations and next actions. It supports Python, Rust, JavaScript, TypeScript, C++ and Go.

It runs locally as a stdio server, installed with uvx topos-mcp from PyPI. The package bundles a Rust binary, and analysis runs on your machine without sending source code to an external model. No API key is needed. The composability score uses a dependency graph that requires gitnexus installed through npm. A separate topos CLI can register the server with supported agents such as Claude Code, Cursor and VS Code.

## What it can do

- Score files on simplicity, composability, security and navigability
- Get a SLOP to PLATINUM quality medal per file
- Find the worst structural problems in a repository
- Verify whether an edit is a real improvement
- Detect risky data flows and dangerous API reachability
- Analyze Python, Rust, JavaScript, TypeScript, C++ and Go

## Example prompts

- "Use Topos to find this repository's worst structural problem and fix it."
- "Evaluate the src folder and tell me which files score SLOP."
- "Refactor this module, then verify with Topos that its score improved."
- "Which files in this project have risky data flows?"

## Install

### Claude Code

1. Run this in a terminal, in your project folder:

```bash
claude mcp add --transport stdio topos -- uvx topos-mcp
```

2. Start Claude Code and type `/mcp`. **topos** should show as connected.

Add `--scope user` to make it available in every project.

### Claude Desktop

1. Open **Settings → Developer → Edit Config**. It opens `claude_desktop_config.json`. Add:

`claude_desktop_config.json`:

```json
{
  "mcpServers": {
    "topos": {
      "command": "uvx",
      "args": [
        "topos-mcp"
      ]
    }
  }
}
```

2. Save the file and restart Claude Desktop.

Needs uv (Python) on your computer. The file lives in `~/Library/Application Support/Claude/` on macOS and `%APPDATA%\Claude\` on Windows.

### Cursor

[Add to Cursor](<https://cursor.com/install-mcp?name=topos&config=eyJjb21tYW5kIjoidXZ4IiwiYXJncyI6WyJ0b3Bvcy1tY3AiXX0%3D>) (opens Cursor)

Or add it by hand to `~/.cursor/mcp.json` (all projects) or `.cursor/mcp.json` (this project):

`mcp.json`:

```json
{
  "mcpServers": {
    "topos": {
      "command": "uvx",
      "args": [
        "topos-mcp"
      ]
    }
  }
}
```

Needs uv (Python) on your computer.

### VS Code

[Install in VS Code](<https://vscode.dev/redirect/mcp/install?name=topos&config=%7B%22type%22%3A%22stdio%22%2C%22command%22%3A%22uvx%22%2C%22args%22%3A%5B%22topos-mcp%22%5D%7D>) (opens VS Code)

Or from a terminal:

```bash
code --add-mcp '{"name":"topos","type":"stdio","command":"uvx","args":["topos-mcp"]}'
```

Or commit it to the repo in `.vscode/mcp.json`:

`.vscode/mcp.json`:

```json
{
  "servers": {
    "topos": {
      "type": "stdio",
      "command": "uvx",
      "args": [
        "topos-mcp"
      ]
    }
  }
}
```

Needs uv (Python) on your computer.

### Devin Desktop

1. Add it to `~/.config/devin/mcp_config.json` (macOS and Linux) or `%APPDATA%\devin\mcp_config.json` (Windows):

`mcp_config.json`:

```json
{
  "mcpServers": {
    "topos": {
      "command": "uvx",
      "args": [
        "topos-mcp"
      ]
    }
  }
}
```

2. Refresh the MCP server list in Cascade.

Devin Desktop is the new name for Windsurf.

### Codex

```bash
codex mcp add topos -- uvx topos-mcp
```

Or edit `~/.codex/config.toml` directly:

`config.toml`:

```toml
[mcp_servers.topos]
command = "uvx"
args = ["topos-mcp"]
```

Needs uv (Python) on your computer.

### Gemini CLI

```bash
gemini mcp add topos uvx topos-mcp
```

This adds it to the current project. Add `-s user` to use it everywhere.

### Any client

Most clients that start local servers accept this shape:

```json
{
  "mcpServers": {
    "topos": {
      "command": "uvx",
      "args": [
        "topos-mcp"
      ]
    }
  }
}
```

Zed puts servers under `context_servers` in its settings, with the same `command`, `args` and `env` fields.

Needs uv (Python) on your computer.
